Studying
Basically I think our home is quite damp for a few reasons, our bedroom door has expanded and it won't even shut anymore, our washing was taking over 4 days to dry, we started to get mould on our front door (which is a big worry as I don't want anymore fungus' on my lungs!) and we were getting loads of condensation on the windows when the heating came on. So we now have a dehumidifier and I have bought a timer plug, so it comes on at certain times during the day. Setting up the timer plug got me very frustrated! It's a seven day digital one and the instructions were NOT good! Anyway I got there in the end after been tempted on several occasions to throw it across the room!
I've started an online course with the University of Exeter on Tudor History. It lasts 12 weeks and there is a unit per week which you read online and then discuss the topic on a forum with others and the tutor. There are also some optional short essays to do which I am going to do of course! Just waiting for some books to come in to the library that I have reserved. I'm not sure yet if it's worth the fee I paid as there isn't that much information in the units, however they do seem to be getting more in depth each week, so perhaps it was just easing us in. I enjoy studying and I enjoy the Tudors so it's keeping me busy, it can be difficult to kept busy when you can't do loads of energetic things!
I know some people think it was a waste of time me going to University, but I really do love studying and if I could afford it, I'd do another part time degree, just because I enjoy studying! People don't always study in order for it to help them get a job, some people just enjoy to learn about a subject. Plus my degree would have helped me get a job if my stupid CF hadn't upped it's antics! I couldn't predict the future! I wouldn't have met Pete either if I didn't go to Uni and that's enough to have made it worthwhile :o)
Pete and I bought a new Christmas tree yesterday. Yes you read that right. The reason is that now we live somewhere bigger I want a bigger tree but if I leave it to closer to Christmas, I won't be able to afford to buy one! So we now have a 7ft tree in our garage, in the box obviously, not set up ready to go!! Notice 'I' want a bigger tree, Pete doesn't really care, it's only me that gets excited about these things!

Alex: A Passion for Life

I think it's good because it catches what it is like to live with CF without been solely based on CF, in my opinion these type of programmes can try to make it appear as bad as possible, look like you are just having a big moan and infact not give a realistic view of CF as it gives the impression the persons whole life is about CF. Infact Alex does the opposite and tries to get on with everything and ignores how he is feeling, ultimately making him run down and end up in hospital. I sat there wondering where the heck he finds the energy to do all these things!
I preferred this one to the last one as it did show more of the CF side to his life, just little things like him coughing his guts up, his port line bleeding back, doing his nebs etc. We all know people with CF take alot of tablets and have to do physio, I don't think it gives the right idea of what CF is. We don't just do physio twice a day, take some tablets and everything is alright. Those bits aren't the difficult parts, ok I lie.... its difficult to find the will to do them and they can be time consuming! The difficult parts are the pain it causes, the embarrassment, the tiredness it brings (as can clearly be seen in Alexs face when he is sat in the car before he does the show), the allergies and side-effects, the discrimination and all the stupid little things like getting hold of the medication and things not working properly! Also knowing its never going to go away isn't the nicest feeling to have.
It also showed typical CF behaviour for example: mum having a go at you for not doing your treatments, telling people you feel 'great!' when they ask even though you feel like death and glossing over things like they are nothing when infact they would freak out your average person. I think everyone with CF can relate to these situations.
I must admit I grit my teeth when the woman said people should aspire to be like him, what exactly does that mean?! Alex is doing what he loves and in my opinion is making himself very ill in the process. If she means people should aspire to do what they love, people do that all the time but it's not that big a deal when you are fit and healthy and able to do it, it should be praised but tends not to be unless there is a giant obstacle in your way. I feel like the TV programme is trying to make him out to be someone to admire and by doing this they are driving him to do more and in the process he gets poorlier, which lets admit makes better TV.....
I hope that Alex slows down, he needs to find the balance to do what he loves but keep on top of his health. At the moment I don't think he is managing this very well, I think all CF teenagers go through this stage, however Alex is taking it the extremes!

Emptying out my work bag
I'll tell you abit about about what I did since I left university and what my hopes were. I did a degree in Law and Psychology at University, it was a 4 year course and I got a 2.i (this is the second highest grade you can get). I didn't move to University, I commuted everyday and I met Pete at university as he lived with my best friend on my course. Pete and I got together in our second year at university, in my final year Pete had finished his degree and went to do a masters degree at a different University about 2 hours away.
I wanted to be a social worker and started some voluntary work as a mentor whilst I was in my final year at university to get some experience. I applied to do the masters in social work which is a 2 year course. I had 2 interviews but didn't get on either course as I didn't have enough experience.
So I went about trying to get more experience, but paid work obviously. In my final year at university my health had started to take abit of a turn, I had my first hospital admission in years and had to have steroids etc, I got an extension on my dissertation so it was all ok. Anyway I decided perhaps I should work part time and so applied for teaching assistant jobs. Most people who want to be social workers would get jobs as a social carer in a home looking after people, I didn't want to do this because I thought I could pick up infections etc and I couldn't cope with working shifts.
I got a job at the local college as an additional support worker where I supported two students with ADHD in their classes. This involved assisting them with their organisational and social skills as well as helping them to keep focused. I also advised subject tutors on the student’s additional requirements. I did 18.5 hours over 4 days, it was ok but quite boring. Alot of the time I was just sat with students in class and mine were studying I.T. so it wasn't even interesting! The tutors would blame me when my students misbehaved, the tutors wouldn't take my advice and I got sick of dealing with kids who were just there to get their ema (payments for going to college) and really weren't interested in the course atall. I did like some of the students though and had a laugh with them, but after about 6 months I was getting itchy feet to move on!
I then took on the role as the early college transfer learning mentor within the 14-16 unit and increased to 30 hours a week, they wouldn't give me the job for any less hours as it was originally advertised for 37hours so they knocked 7 hours off for me, I should have never taken the job really. This involved working with year 11 students who attend college to achieve a vocational qualification. I provided one-to-one support such as addressing problem behaviours and attitudes, liaised with the tutors and monitored the students attendance. Basically these were kids that the schools didn't want anymore so the college takes them to try give them a more vocational and less academic education, for example they could do hairdressing, bricklaying etc. Again, I liked the students, well most of them anyway even though most of them were hopeless and had no intention to pass their courses and had parents who had no intention of trying to motivate them. I spent alot of the time phoning parents listening to excuses about why their child wasn't in college even though they were still in compulsory education so had to come in. I spent alot of time trying to get tutors to actually make an effort with the students as they don't like them and can't even be bothered. I also spent alot of time not really sure what my role was and feeling like people just gave me stuff to do that they didn't want to do! It's basically a job with no or little rewards and just abit hopeless really!
By this time I had gone off becoming a social worker as I realised I would probably have to deal with people that were hopeless and a waste of space alot of the time. I think having cf makes me less able to tolerate people, some people are so ungrateful and abuse thier bodies and use every excuse under the sun to not do things. I just want to tell them to get a grip!
I applied to go on a teaching course as I did enjoy the college setting but just not with the area I was working in, and thought if I taught A-levels I would be dealing with more mature, eager students rather than drop outs in the lower level courses as I was doing at the moment. Anyway I got on the course but my health continued to decline, I was having time off work all the time, going home early, I was always tired and I finally realised I couldn't go on like this. I was letting people down and making myself ill all for the sake of having a job to try prove something. So I quit working at the college and deferred my place on the teaching course for a year. It's still open to me next year if I want to do it but I doubt I will.
So it's abit weird, because in just over a year I have gone from having all these goals of what careers I want, to not having one atall. It's a shame really because I think i'm actually quite good at working with and helping people and I do enjoy it. I'm still doing my voluntary work as a mentor which is good as I don't feel completely useless! I just have to keep reminding myself that I feel alot better now, my lung function is up, I can do things with my friends etc rather than working and going straight to bed and never seeing them. Yes I am poorer and I feel abit inadequate when I sit with my friends and they rave on about their jobs, I also am sad that all my hard work throughout school and university has not amounted to anything apart from grades on a piece of paper. But I made some good friends along the way and got myself a fiance and I am happier now than I was 6-7 months ago, so I have finally emptied out my bag and got rid of my old life and now I can use it to go to the gym which is part of my new healthier and relaxed life. I think i'm finally starting to see whats important :o) xx

Decisions to make
Yesterday I found out I cannot claim incapacity benefit as I have not contributed enough NI, which is abit of a bummer. Ive been practically working part time or full time since I was 15 years old, even when I was doing my degree (apart from one year I took out) so don't see how its possible I have not contributed enough, but there you go. Anyway she has said I can apply for youth incapacity benefit but have to wait 6 months! Erm so I have to live on thin air until then.... I've applied for income support anyway but not sure if i'll get anything as Pete works full-time, he's an assistant town planner incase you were wondering what he does.
I got a call from the university today saying they have found me a work placement in Rotherham which is about 40 minutes away from where I live so quite far considering petrol and time it will take travelling. I still don't know if I want to go back to university, I dont know if it will make my health deteriorate with all the travelling, work load etc and if I can afford it. I'm not sure if I even want to be a teacher or could manage being one, I would like to do the course to give me something to focus on and see if I would like to be a teacher but its a waste of money if I don't become a teacher and if it makes my health worsen! Stupid cf getting in the way as usual, i'm just stuck with what to do. Plus now i'm worried if I do go to uni and my health worsens so that I definitely can't work I won't be able to get any incapacity benefit as I only qualify for this youth benefit because i'm under 25! Cf is a pain, you just don't know if you can manage things until you do them and you can feel great one day and rubbish another day. Im at a stage where I can still do some things but if I push myself too much my health will get worse like it did when I was working full-time. I feel so much better not working but feel abit useless and like I should be doing something but then I don't want to jeopardise my health. Its very tricky, very tricky indeed and also hard explaining this to people. I get sick of people asking me what i'm going to do with my degree and I know people think it was a waste of 4 years if I don't do anything with it even if they don't say it, but I didn't know what my health would be like in 4 years when I started university plus my health was great back then! Also I enjoyed univeristy and I love studying so would have still gone. I also know people think i'm lazy or whatever when I say i'm not working because of my health, because to look at me I appear fine, maybe I should walk with a limp from now on so people believe me...
ps- I did not mean to offend anyone who has a limp xx

Whats that got to do with the price of fish?
I've had a busy day today, I had to get up pretty early to go to Sheffield to have my crb check to get onto the teaching course I'm hoping to go on. Sheffield is about 30-40 mins from where I live on a good day, it was a nice sunny day and I drove with my shades on and Girls Aloud on and then the Spice Girls! Im such a pop girly girl. Didn't have the roof down though as it gets too windy on the motorway.
I then took Alfie for a nice long walk, I think all this walking is doing me good. I can go further now before I get out of breath! Then I went to get my repeat prescription from the GP's, I took it to the chemist which is where I realised they has missed off my Dnase. So I had to ring the GP's up and they are arranging for me to collect the prescription tomorrow, its a pain though because now I have to go back and it's not exactly around the corner! How can they miss something off that I've asked for?! I think they think that if they miss it off I won't notice and they can save abit of money....yeah right! My Dnase is like one of my most important medications!
When I got home there was a car in my parking space! Its clearly marked which my flat number and all the spaces are private. Some guy who I had already had to stop for so I didn't run him over was walking towards the car so I had a go at him, he wouldn't go park on someones drive would he?! Whats the difference? This has happened before and I parked behind them to block them in, I ended up in abit of an argument but I think I got my point across!
Picked up Pete from the train station in the afternoon, he got me a present! yeay! He got me a milka chocolate bar (yum) and a flannel that's like a glove... thanks Pete..... It's a good job I love him! I had a nice kip in the afternoon after I had collected my lover! Here is a video from Petes holiday that I found rather funny, beware he swears because he is drunk! He also attempts abit of french...
Then I went swimming this evening, it was fun! There were 3 lanes, fast, medium and slow. Guess which lane I had to go in? yes the slow one, and I think I was the slowest of the slowest! My friend went in the medium lane but kept asking me if i was OK lol. She even told the lifeguard I had cf and to keep an eye on me, I could see them chatting and looking at me! I used a floaty thing so that I didn't drown from getting out of breath and just concentrated on using my legs. We did it for about half an hour, my chest was feeling very tight towards the end. I'm going to get a discount card which I can get for free because I'm disabled which is good. I must say I look very attractive in my swimming costume and with my swimming cap on....not! Hence why I have not provided a picture! I didn't have my physio today as I thought I would be swimming when I normally have it, but I ended up going later. My justification is that swimming is kind of physio!

Can you become a blog addict?
I've been helping out at my mums barber shop (I trained to cut mens hair whilst at uni alongside my studies) whilst Pete is away to keep myself occupied and help out as one of the members of staff was on holiday. Its nice because I feel abit useful too rather than sat around. Its made me really tired though, especially since I had to get up really early because my nebuliser is taking so long! I helped colour T's hair as the colour was fading abit, he has a really cool pattern of a sun on his head, heres a picture and one of me at the salon!
My cough has become abit more productive and i'm sick of coughing on a morning and night! I bet the neighbours think i'm one of those people that make myself sick! Sometimes I try to suppress the coughing to stop the coughing fit and my head kinda shakes and I feel like its going to explode! But it stops the coughing which is good lol. I've had headache all today because I was coughing for like an hour on and off this morning, hopefully I might get a six pack though :o) Its weird though because I dont tend to cough in public, only when i'm at home etc where no-one can see me. Its like I hold them in until noone is around and then I unleash them! Ive also had constipation (you wanted to know that didn't you?!), so been binging on movicol as my tummy has felt very hard and bloated (maybe its going hard due to my six pack developing...hehe), it seems to be better now anyway. Im feeling quite exhausted so cancelled my friend coming over tonight, she was pretty tired too as she just came back from her holidays so didnt mind. We are going swimming on monday, im abit nervous about been seen in my swimming costume!!
Last night I went to the dog races with people from the college were I worked but recently left. It was a great night, I bet on one dog for 10 races and 2 of my dogs won! So I spent £10 and got £7 back which isn't too bad. The dogs were so cute, I wanted to stroke them but you can't do that :o( Heres a picture of my first winning ticket, I picked this dog because it was called Murphy like Alfies best buddy! Alfie had a sleep over with Murphy last night so I was all alone when I got home. I got home at 11.10pm and still did my nebuliser, im such a good girl!

My scar on my right arm developed a pussy spot that really hurt. I soaked it in the bath yesterday and popped it, dont know if this was good idea as now there is kind of a hole in it and it gone kind of crusty. Oh don't I discuss some nice things on my blog?! haha
I found out today that I can only get a grant for £1250 to go to uni in september, this one you dont have to pay back which I was hoping if I got enough I could manage on my savings and the grant as I dont want to extend my student loan. Im abit gutted im only allowed to have this much and not sure what to do now, Im considering leaving it for a few years until i've saved up some more and can be classed as independent.
Im really missing Pete, I cant wait for him to come home. He's called me a few times which is nice.

Jolly good weekend!
Saturday night Pete and I went out for chinese, we had three courses and I was so full and also quite drunk! Its the first time i've had a drink since before my iv's and after about 1 glass of wine I was feeling rather tipsy! I wore my new dress I got from the sale in Topshop, I must say I think I look rather good in it! We went to my parents to pick Alfie up as we left him with his buddy Murphy whilst we went out for tea as Alfie was very miserable, he was shaking and wouldn't eat his treats which is very unusual for him! After 2 hours with Murphy he was alot happier! We ended up staying at my parents for a few drinks and I ended up 'mashed' as my brother calls it. I then subjected Pete to listening to all my favourite songs when we got back home and I was dancing around and basically acting like a drunk crazy woman. At least he got to use his camcorder to get some embarrassing videos of me! Even though I was drunk I still did my nebuliser, which is pretty impressive. Although the stupid thing is broken. It won't work unless its in the charger even though I charged it up all yesterday, yesterday morning it took 20 mins to go through and then last night it only took 5 minutes, it keeps leaking stuff everywhere and an error code of 11 keeps coming up and I have to reset it. I'll have to call the company on monday.
I wokeup alot during in the night and at one point had a coughing fit, Pete didn't even wake up, thats how used he is to it! I had a dehydration sachet to stop me getting headache in the morning and it worked!!
Today we took Alfie and Murphy for a walk as the wheather is lovely! We then went to the pub for lunch and sat outside with the dogs, here is Pete with his new cool shades on that he got off his parents for his birthday

Here is a picture of the doggies! I'm trying to take them for more walks as its good exercise for me and will hopefully improve my health if I get more exercise. I would like to start swimming although I get out of breath after like 2 seconds when i'm swimming. When we went to Gambia it was horrible, I took a floaty thing around with me to keep me afloat for when I got out of breath.
We then went shopping as Pete wanted to get some clothes with his vouchers that he got for his birthday, it was nice driving there with the roof down, the car is finally reaching its full potential!
I'm now making a sunday roast, making my own roast potatoes, cooking a chicken (free range may I add), veg, stuffing the whole lot! i'm getting qute a pro at these sunday roasts.
